TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Troy fell 7-3 at Alabama on Tuesday night in its final game before opening conference play this weekend.
Each team recorded five hits on the evening, but the Crimson Tide (15-3) drew seven walks and five HBPs to the Trojans' (6-10) five walks and one HBP.Â
Chase Cartron, making his first career start, hit the first two batters he faced before Alabama took an early lead on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Luke Vaughn. The Crimson Tide continued to manufacture runs in similar fashion against the Troy bullpen, which used eight pitchers in total, scoring in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Alabama turned a one-out walk into a sacrifice fly in the fifth, a leadoff hit batter into another sac fly in the sixth, and a leadoff hit batter into an RBI double by catcher John Lemm in the seventh.
Alabama's big inning came in the second, when Jose Torres homered on Dylan King's first pitch of the frame. King exited after issuing back-to-back walks, and the Trojans turned to Hayden Smith. Two inherited runners scored on a Justin Lebron single, but Smith settled in and delivered a career-long 3.1 innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two without surrendering an earned run.
Troy pushed across a run in the third against Alabama starter Bobby Alcock, who allowed four of the Trojans' five hits over his three innings. Drew Nelson and Zaid Diaz delivered back-to-back two-out singles, and Josh Pyne brought Nelson home with a double down the line. Diaz attempted to score from first on the play but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
Troy briefly cut the deficit to 5–3 at the top of the sixth after Josh Pyne reached on an error to open the inning. Two batters later, Jimmy Janicki skied his fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot off Alabama reliever Evan Streckmesser, which ties Aaron Piasecki for the team lead.
