TROY, Ala. - Troy Baseball earned its first series victory of the season on Sunday, topping Campbell 8-4 in the finale after dropping game two 13-1 earlier in the day.
Game two, which was resumed at the top of the third inning after Saturday night's weather delay, saw the Camels blast four home runs and 13 hits while the Trojans manufactured seven hits.Â
Troy starter Noah Thigpen allowed two runs on Saturday night while Campbell's Connor Hensley started the game with two straight zeroes; however, both teams turned to different pitchers after the 16-hour, 54-minute suspension.Â
Cooper Clark handled the final five innings for Campbell, striking out three while allowing one run on five hits with one walk as the Camels pulled away for the run-rule victory. Junior right-hander Matteo Pare tossed 1.2 innings in relief for Troy, followed by Hayden Smith and Brady Richardson, as Campbell plated 11 runs against the Trojan bullpen, highlighted by a seven-run fourth inning.
Troy's pitching staff flipped the script in the finale, holding Campbell scoreless after a four-run second inning. Starter Benjamin Stubbs struck out two across three innings, while left-hander Zach Crotchfelt and right-hander Dylan Alonso combined for six consecutive shutout frames in relief. Crotchfelt earned the win with three strikeouts over 3.1 innings, and Alonso secured the save with four strikeouts in 2.1 innings, inducing a double play on his first pitch after entering with two on and one out in the seventh.
Blake Cavill launched a three-run homer in the top of the first inning for the Trojans after Aaron Piasecki and Jimmy Janicki started the game with a walk and an HBP. While the Camels fought back with their four-run second, Janicki got the run right back with an RBI double in the bottom of the frame.
Jabe Boroff skied his first home run as a Trojan over the left field wall to break the tie, and Campbell starter Zach Sabers ended one batter later after plunking Caden Reeves. Josh Pyne was the first to strike against the Campbell bullpen, homering off of David Rossow for his first Trojan homer with Reeves on first to put Troy ahead 7-4.
In the sixth, Troy took advantage of a trio of free passes and scored an insurance run on an RBI fielder's choice from Steven Meier.
Notables
Quotable - Head Coach Skylar Meade
"To answer back and play so excellently in the second game post-ugliness, I think, should tell our guys that there's a level that we maybe haven't gotten to yet. But you're seven games in, it's not really indicative of what you are. Just a tremendous job by us offensively, throwing the first punch, and handling their punch even though we could have gotten out of that second [inning]."
