MONTGOMERY, Ala. – After taking a drive up the road to Montgomery, the Troy softball team shut out Alabama State 4-0. The Trojans (26-17, 5-7 SBC) used two home runs and strong pitching to beat the Hornets (11-28, 9-6 SWAC) at their home field.
Alyssa Faircloth (11-5) shut down the Hornets from the circle, punching out four batters over her five innings of work. The Troy ace allowed only three hits during her outing. Mya Holt entered the game in relief and finished Troy's eighth shutout of the season.
Makaley Boswell was a force to be reckoned with out of the leadoff spot, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Boswell crushed a solo home run and hit a double.
In her hometown, Taylor McKinney had a perfect night – she went 2-for-2 with two walks to continue a 26-game on-base streak. Reaghan Oney was the other Trojan to get multiple hits, as she hit a double and a triple en route to a 2-for-3 performance.
The Trojans struck in the first inning, getting it started with a McKinney walk. With two outs in the inning, Cassidy Boltz brought her home with a double to center field.
Troy extended the lead to 2-0 in the second inning after Oney tripled – her second triple of the season. Natalie Turner reached on an infield single as Oney dashed home.
Although the Trojans couldn't get another run in the third, Faircloth continued her strong start with a one-two-three inning.
In the fourth, Oney smacked a double to left field, but Troy didn't push the run across. Two strikeouts got Faircloth out of the bottom of the inning.
Boswell continued her hot streak, bashing a home run to left field in the fifth to widen the lead to 3-0. Over her eight-game hit streak, she has hit three home runs to bring her season total to five.
Annie Orman pushed Troy's lead to 4-0 in the sixth inning, launching a homer to left field to lead off the frame. After not homering until Mar. 30 against ULM, Orman has hit a long ball in four of the last seven games.
Holt entered in the bottom of the sixth inning and forced three straight groundouts. She ended the game with another clean inning, striking out one batter in a scoreless seventh.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"It's nice to get a win midweek here. Alabama State was tough tonight, and it looked like a different Alabama State team than the first time we played them in February. We put up 10 hits, but there were a couple things baserunning wise that I think went their way. One or two of them I wasn't a fan of, but a few of them they just made good plays, and that made the game closer. We took care of business – our pitchers pitched well and our defense defended well."
