TROY, Ala. – Troy softball picked up its first-ever series win against Louisiana, splitting Saturday's doubleheader at the Troy Softball Complex with a walk-off win in game one of the day.
The Trojans (25-17, 5-7 SBC) tied a season-high of 13 hits in game one to defeat Louisiana (19-18, 5-7 SBC) 6-5. The Trojans couldn't replicate their offensive prowess in game two, as they recorded five hits in a 4-1 loss.
Mia Tidmore came up big in game one, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs coming from a two-out double – she finished the day 5-for-7. Cassidy Boltz was also a significant contributor in game one, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs – she would end the day 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a walk.
Game 1: Troy 6, Louisiana 5
The Trojans won game one over Louisiana 6-5 with a walk-off single to right field by Makaley Boswell after the Ragin' Cajuns tacked on four runs early in the contest.
Troy got its first run on the board, 4-1, when Tidmore singled through the left side, and after advancing on a wild pitch, McKinnon Howard drove her in via a single to left field. After Louisiana responded with a run in the top of the fifth, 5-1, Tidmore delivered two crucial runs in the bottom half as she hit a two-RBI double with two outs back up the middle, 5-3.
Following a 3-for-7 series against West Georgia, Boltz picked it up in game one with a 3-for-4 outing. After two outs were put on the board in the bottom of the sixth, Taylor McKinney earned the full-count walk, followed by a 4-0 walk by Caiden Oliva. With runners on first and second, Boltz rocketed a double to center field, bringing both home to tie the game at 5.
Mya Holt pitched three straight groundouts at the top of the seventh to bring out the offense for a chance at the win. The bottom of the inning saw Natalie Turner reach on a fielder's choice. Howard placed herself on first and the senior shortstop at second with another single to left field. Down 1-2 in the count, Boswell found her pitch, placing the ball into right-center to walk off the ballgame as she brought Turner home for the series victory.
Game 2: Troy 1, Louisiana 4
The Ragin' Cajuns started quickly by picking up a run in the top of the second, 1-0, as Sam Roe singled on her first pitch to start Louisiana off. After a sac bunt put Roe on second, Mia Norwood secured an RBI triple to right center for the first run of game two.
The Trojans quickly disregarded the run as Annie Orman drew the walk before Tidmore singled up the middle to put runners on first and third. However, Noble Bethaney got Louisiana out of the inning as she earned a strike out, fly out and line out to keep the Trojans off the board.
Both teams remained silent until Louisiana pushed its advantage to two, 2-0, in the top of the fifth off a single, walk and a pair of sac bunts. Troy responded in the bottom half when Boswell bunted a single back to the pitcher on the first pitch, and Oliva put runners on the corners with a single to right center. Boltz sent a sac fly out to right field to bring one run in via Boswell, 2-1, but en route to second, Oliva got picked off to end the inning.
Louisiana ballooned its advantage to three in the top of the sixth on four hits, including a homer to open the inning from Emily Smith, and coasted to a 4-1 victory and avoid the sweep.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"Super excited to make history today as to my understanding [this is] the first series victory against Louisiana, a storied program. We played well this weekend. Defensively, we played really well this weekend. Obviously, you win the first two, and you want to get the last one but all in all, I can't complain. This was a really good weekend for us."
