TROY, Ala. - Seven spectacular innings from Grayson Stewart in relief helped No. 15 Troy to a 9-4 win over Texas State to clinch the series at Riddle-Pace Field on Saturday.
Stewart took over in a 9-0 ballgame in the third inning after Troy starter Noah Edders loaded the bases with no outs. While Stewart allowed four runs across in the frame, the senior right-hander followed with six shutout innings to stop the Bobcats' attempt at a comeback.
The Dothan, Ala., native finished with a season-high seven strikeouts to go along with two hits, one run, zero earned runs and one walk in his season-high 7.0 innings of work. From the fourth inning on, Stewart retired 17 consecutive Texas State hitters to close out the ballgame.Â
Stewart recorded his second win of the week. The righty pitched three innings of one-run ball in Troy's 12-10 win over Alabama State on Tuesday. Stewart picked up his fifth win of the season and the 24th of his career, which ranks fourth in Troy history.Â
The Trojans offense knocked Texas State starter Jesus Tovar around for nine runs in the first two innings, tallying 11 of their 12 hits against the Bobcat lefty. The Trojans put up four runs in the first on a two-run double from Steven Meier, an RBI single from Brooks Bryan and an RBI groundout by Gavin Schrader.
In the second, Houston Markham ripped an RBI double into the right-center gap while Blake Cavill crushed a solo home run to left-center. It was Cavill's eighth homer of the season, which ties Bryan for the team lead. Meier recorded his second hit of the day for an RBI single, while Harrison Bowman knocked in two on a double off the left-center wall.
Game 3 between Troy (31-12, 14-6 Sun Belt) and Texas State 20-23 (8-12 Sun Belt) is slated for 12 p.m. at Riddle-Pace FIeld.

QuotablesÂ
Head Coach Skylar Meade on the pitching…
"That was a pretty good week for Stew. Ten innings, one earned run. My goodness, he got better as he went. He really didn't throw a lot of pitches for seven innings. He just got better as he went. We couldn't be more proud of him and what he did. Noah not being 100% himself - those guys were warriors today and I think the team really fed off that."
Grayson Stewart on coming into the ballgame in the third…
"Edders has been so awesome this year. He's been a catalyst for us going deep into ballgames. Any time I can pick him up, I love to do that because he's such a great teammate. Working for me today was just flowing through my mechanics, staying athletic, not thinking. Just ripping my best stuff every single pitch."
