Nicolas Simkin Named SBC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week

TROY, Ala. – Following a strong end to the regular season – which included both a singles and doubles win – Troy's Nicolas Simkin was named the Sun Belt Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday afternoon.
Simkin, a redshirt senior from Salta, Argentina, has been Troy's No. 2 singles play during Sun Belt play and recorded a massive 6-3, 6-4 win over Georgia State's Edward Tymes in the Trojans 4-1 victory on Saturday to close out the regular season. Simkin will enter the Sun Belt Tournament having won his last three matches.
"I'm really happy for Nicolas to earn this weekly honor," head coach Rolando Vargas said. "He's been working really hard, and he was able to lead his teammates. He really put the team on his shoulders."
Simkin's singles win on Saturday marked the first loss of the conference season for Tymes, who is one of the best players in the conference. In addition to the impressive singles win, Simkin also recorded a 6-3 win with Noah Martens in the No. 1 doubles spot.
It's the first time a Trojan has won player of the week this season.
Troy opens play in the Sun Belt Tournament on Friday morning when it takes on Louisiana in the quarterfinals. First serve is set for 9 a.m. in Rome, Ga.
