WEST POINT, Miss. – Looking to pad its resume for the NCAA Regionals, the Troy men's golf team fired a 12-under over Monday's opening two rounds of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship at the Old Waverly Golf Course. The Trojans are in fourth place, just three shots back of No. 32 Mississippi State and a shot back of No. 15 Alabama.
Troy's 564 matches its second-best 36-hole mark of the season as three Trojans shot under-par on the day, led by Jake Springer's 5-under. Springer made the turn even in the first round and played 7-under over his final 27 holes, finishing 2-under on the back in the first round before carding five birdies and no bogeys in his second round.
No. 3 Ole Miss showed why it's one of the nation's premier teams, shooting 40-under on the day to grab a commanding 25-shot lead over in-state rival Mississippi State. From there, the leaderboard gets more cluttered. The Bulldogs are 15-under, followed by Alabama at 13-under, Troy at 12-under and Memphis at 4-under.
Troy played clean golf throughout the day, leading the field with 124 pars and carded the second-fewest bogeys with 24.
Brantley Scott and Lee Poppell are tied for 11th place at 4-under. Scott shot 68 in the morning while Poppell fired matching rounds of 70, his eighth and ninth rounds under-par this season. Pablo Gracia carded four birdies on the day to finish 1-over and tied for 27th, while Nick Fowlkes is tied for 52nd place at 7-over.
Teams wrap up play on Tuesday with staggered tee times; Troy goes off beginning at 8:50 a.m. from No. 1, along with Cincinnati and Memphis.
