HARRISONBURG, Va. - An efficient performance on the mound from Noah Edders and two home runs from Blake Cavill boosted No. 18 Troy to a 6-3 win over James Madison to even the series at Eagle field.
Batting in the leadoff spot for the second time this season, Cavill went 3-for-5 on the day, singling in the top of the first inning and scoring on a base hit by freshman third baseman Jimmy Janicki. The senior from Sydney, Australia, crushed a two-run shot 418 feet dead center in his second at-bat and followed it with a three-run blast to right center in the fourth inning, giving him five of Troy's six RBIs on the day.
Troy did all of its damage against JMU starter Casey Smith, knocking him out after the fourth inning. While the James Madison bullpen tossed five scoreless frames, the Trojans countered with a strong performance on the day from the junior right-hander Edders.
Edders allowed one run across the board in each of the first three frames but settled down in the fourth inning and cruised to 7.0 innings with five hits, three runs, two earned runs, one walk and four strikeouts on 83 pitches. Edders stranded a runner on second in the fourth, as shortstop Jakob Wax made a miraculous leaping grab on a popup down the third base line before an inning-ending groundout.
Freshman Noah Thigpen closed things out for the Trojans in the final two innings, picking up the first save of his career. The Lake Park, Ga., native held the Dukes to one hit while recording one strikeout. Thigpen has now been scoreless in each of his last five appearances, totaling 8.2 innings pitched.
Game 3 between Troy and James Madison is slated for 10 a.m. CT at Eagle Field. Neither team has announced a starting pitcher for the rubber match.

Quotables
Head Coach Skylar Meade on the win…..
"Obviously, Blake was the star of the show today. He was really solid defensively, and then he had three great swings, obviously two of them for homers. They were the difference in the game, and then everyone named Noah did well, so that's good for the Trojans."
Blake Cavill on his offensive performance…
"After yesterday's tough loss, we had to come out here and show some excitement. I felt like I needed to lead the team today - be an older guy and help the team out, and that's what I did for the boys."
