HARRISONBURG, Va. - No. 18 Troy won its ninth consecutive series to start the season, picking up a 4-0 victory in Sunday's rubber match at James Madison behind nine dominant innings from the Trojan pitching staff.Â
Jay Dill, making his first start of the year, went 4.0 shutout innings before Colby Frieda took over in the fifth and did the same in his career-high 4.0 innings of action. Grayson Stewart opened the ninth for Troy, surrendering two hits and getting a flyout, before handing the ball to Luke Lyon who picked up the save with two infield popups to secure Troy's second shutout of the season.
Dill worked through a leadoff walk and an error in the first, striking out two and forcing a flyout to end the inning. In his four innings of work, senior right-hander held the Dukes to one hit, while walking four and stirking out three. Frieda was tremendous in the four following innings, striking out four and and allowing three hits with one walk.
While the Trojans were outhit 6-4, getting two hits apiece from freshmen Houston Markham and Jimmy Janicki, they cashed in on some free passes in the third inning against JMU starter Todd Mozoki. A Jason Hawkins HBP, a Blake Cavill walk and a Markham single loaded the bases, while the Trojans scored all three runs on the free pass with an HBP from Brooks Bryan and walks from Janicki and Dillon Kuehl, knocking Mozoki out of the game.
Troy scored one run against lefty Max Kuhle, who pitched the final 6.1 innings in relief for the Dukes. In the eighth inning, Markham singled and reached second on a failed pickoff attempt before Janicki knocked him on a single through the right side.Â

Quotables
Head coach Skylar Meade on the pitching performance…
"Dill giving us four of shutout was great. Frieda was tremendous. I thought he was really nasty - just the way the ball came out of the hand. The full repertoire was one display. Stew came in and attacked the zone, just had a few pitches he didn't execute. You have to trust your gut sometimes. Stew's been such a guy for us this year. The numbers speak for themselves, and what he's done historically. But we said hey, we need to pass it on. Luke has been coming. He's been getting better and better. He's been working hard and I think he rewarded us."
Colby Frieda on the shutout…
"It's as simple as throwing strikes. We attacked the zone and trusted our stuff. It always pays off when you attack the zone.Â
