Trojans Drop Midweek Contest to Auburn
3/26/2025 9:24:00 PM | Softball
1,571 fans crowded into the Troy Softball Complex to watch the game – the figure is seventh all-time for the Trojans home venue.
Troy's offense came alive late, scoring four runs in the last three innings. The Trojans are the only team in the country besides No. 1 Texas to score more than three runs off Auburn ace SJ Geurin this season.
From the top of the lineup, Makaley Boswell and Taylor McKinney shined. Boswell went 2-for-3 with a double and a single, scoring a run in the process.
Meanwhile, McKinney extended her hit streak to 12 games with an RBI double in the fifth inning. She went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, roping an RBI triple to right field in the sixth to keep the game alive.
Although Auburn led off the game with a single, Sarah Beth Brake threw a strike down to second to nab Icess Tresvik trying to steal. Mya Holt worked around another Tigers hit to finish a scoreless first inning.
After Tresvik worked a scoreless inning from the circle, Holt went back out and kept Auburn scoreless in the top of the second inning. Troy struck first in the bottom of the second, as Caiden Oliva and Reaghan Oney both singled. A wild pitch brought Oliva home and gave Troy a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers tied the game up at 1-1 in the third inning, knocking Holt out of the game. However, Savannah Money worked out of the bases-loaded jam. McKinnon Howard snagged a line drive to center field and fired a laser beam to second base to double the runner off.
Troy went right back to it, with Howard singling to lead off the inning and Boswell rocketing a double to right-center. McKinney loaded the bases with a walk, but two strikeouts and a groundout forced by Geurin ended the inning.
In the top of the fourth inning, Money worked around back-to-back singles to keep the score knotted. The Trojans couldn't get any baserunners on in the bottom of the frame.
The Tigers took the lead in the fifth inning, scoring six runs off three hits and four walks. Auburn took the 7-1 lead into the bottom of the frame.
Troy wasted no time battling back, as Howard and Boswell hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. McKinney kept her hit streak alive with a double down the third base line, scoring Howard and cutting the deficit to five runs.
Troy loaded the bases yet again after a walk from Kayden Dunn, setting up a crucial spot for Oliva. The true freshman hit a sacrifice fly to the warning track to make it a 7-3 game. Reese Green got hit by a pitch, and Oney followed it up with another sacrifice fly to cut Auburn's lead to three.
With two outs on the board in the top of the sixth inning, Auburn staged a two-out rally to push its lead to eight runs. McKinney's RBI triple – her third of the season – helped Troy avoid the run-rule in the sixth.
Kate Peters struck out two batters in the top of the seventh, holding Auburn scoreless. Geurin closed out the game in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"The first thing I want to say is thank you to Trojan Nation. The amount of fans that were here tonight was over 1,500. I thought offensively we really did some nice things, but pitching wise we struggled at times and that's disappointing. I hate that for our fanbase but thank you to all the people that came out and watched. I wish the outcome was a little different, and I think the game was a little closer than the final score indicated."
