Trojans Roll Western Michigan to End Weekend
3/2/2025 11:28:00 AM | Softball
Gainesville, Fla. – Behind a complete game shutout from Alyssa Faircloth, Troy softball blanked Western Michigan 9-0 in six innings. The Trojans (12-8) finished their run at the Florida Invitational in dominant fashion, shutting down the Broncos (5-13) in run-rule fashion.
Faircloth fired six scoreless innings, striking out nine batters and picking up the first shutout of her career. It was Troy's first 5+ inning shutout by a pitcher since Libby Baker shut out Coastal Carolina on May 9, 2024.
Reaghan Oney kept her 10-game hit streak alive, smacking a two-RBI double in Troy's six-run sixth inning. Caiden Oliva also had an RBI – she had an RBI in every game of the Florida invitational except one and has driven in a run in five of the last seven games.
Troy started out the game strong – Boswell drove a single up the middle to lead it off, and advanced on a wild pitch. Oliva drove her in soon after with a groundout to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
Faircloth struck out five out of the first seven batters she saw, working swiftly against Western Michigan. Although the Troy bats couldn't get much going for a few innings, the offense piled on in the fourth.
Taylor McKinney and Oliva hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, putting runners on second and third. Sissy Dunn struck out, but the pitch scrambled away from the catcher and McKinney raced home to widen the lead to two. Oney followed it up with a sacrifice fly to give Troy a 3-0 advantage.
Faircloth continued to roll through the Broncos lineup, and the Trojans ran away with a huge six-run sixth inning. Oney lined a double down the left field line to score two Trojans in the inning, and Troy kept the line moving in the inning.
Faircloth worked around a few baserunners in the bottom of the inning to seal the run-rule win.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"I thought we played pretty good softball today. It was certainly kind of a grind early, but you're going to have games like that. Their pitchers had us guessing just a bit, but we opened it up in the sixth inning and I'm glad to get the 9-0 win. I think this team is moving in the right direction, but there's still things to work on."
