MOBILE, Ala. โ The Troy track and field program opened its outdoor season Friday and Saturday with the South Alabama Outdoor Invitational, finding a second-place finish on the men's and women's side with 165 and 178 points, respectively.
ย
"It was a good opener for the most part," director of track & field/cross country Marc Davis said. "Most people did what we thought. We had quite a few exceed expectations. The winds were awful today, so the goal was competition over time. We competed well, and that's the name of the game. Next week, we go to USFโa huge step up in competition. If we come to a challenge, we can do well. We cannot be intimidated by higher-level competition. We have to embrace it. I am looking forward to the trip."
ย
The Trojans claimed gold on 13 occasions, including a trio in 400m events on the women's side. Xariyah Hatchett debuted in the outdoor season in the women's 400m and topped the charts with a 1:02.21 โ Aaliyah Murphy followed suit in the 400m hurdles at 1:02.66. Troy put all the pieces together in the 4x400m relay as Jasmine Jimenez, Catherine Forbes, Shanyah Washington and Kady Schwietz joined forces for a time of 4:06.90.
ย
Troy went on to sweep the 800m races as Michael Marvin (1:58.33) claimed the victory on the men's side while Haley Wilson (2:19.06) won for the women. They also swept gold in the shot-put event via Altwayne Bedward (17.18m) for the men and Joy Edward (14.58m) for the women.
ย
On the men's side, Caden Blackman (1500m โ 4:07.48), Keylan Hicks (long jump โ 7.15m) and the quartet of Tydreke Thomas, Evan Brown, Milos Nisic and Michael Eady (4x100m relay) rounded out the first-place finishes. Meanwhile, on the women's side, it was the quartet of Imari Johnson, Forbes, Murphy and Washington, and Shanara Richards (discus โ 44.98m) who grabbed victories on their side.
