TROY, Ala. – The Troy men's tennis team, who's riding a nine-match winning streak, opens conference play this weekend, as it travels to Georgia Southern on Friday and Coastal Carolina on Sunday. First serve is set for 12 p.m. in Statesboro, Ga., and 9 a.m. in Conway, S.C.
Troy (14-4) has not lost since Feb. 1 and is looking to extend its winning streak as conference play gets underway. Last season, the Trojans went 4-4 in conference play and fell in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Tournament.
The Trojans currently have three players with winning streaks of 10 or more matches in singles play. Hiiro Sakakmoto is leading the way with a 15-1 record and has won his last 13 matches. He is 8-0 in the No. 4 spot and 7-1 in the No. 5 spot. Yeray Andres Pastor and Luciano Alcocer have each won 10 matches in a row. Pastor is 12-1 this season, including 3-0 at No. 1 and 9-1 at No. 2. Alcocer is 11-1 with a 10-match winning streak with all his wins at No. 6.
As a whole, the Trojans are 66-26 in singles during dual play. Including the fall season, Troy is 91-40.
Troy has been just as dominant in doubles this season, posting a 30-16 record in dual play. The pairing of Henrique de Brito and Pastor are 8-0 this spring, including 7-0 in the No. 2 spot with a win in the No. 1 spot. The duo of Sakamoto and Alcocer have a team-high 13 wins when paired together and have primarily played in the No. 3 spot.
Georgia Southern (9-5) has won its last three matches, which include victories over Samford, UAB and Mercer. Pol del Castillo is 8-4 this season to lead the Eagles and is 7-3 over the last 10 matches. As a team, Georgia Southern is 41-33 in singles and 21-11 in doubles.
Coastal Carolina (4-6) has lost its last two matches against No. 13 UCF and Stetson. The Chanticleers are 23-22 in singles this spring and are led by Christopher Norlin and Emiliano Balmaceda Gonzalez, who each have five wins.
