Men’s Tennis Sweeps Alcorn State on Saturday

VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Troy men's tennis team dominated both of its matches against Alcorn State on Saturday afternoon at the City Park Tennis Center to get back into the win column.

Troy (7-4) picked up a 4-1 win in the first match of the day before sweeping the Braves 4-0 in the second match. Saturday marked the third time that Troy has swept a doubleheader this season. The Trojans beat Auburn-Montgomery and West Alabama in doubleheaders at home in January.

Match 1: Troy 4, Alcorn State 1
The Braves kicked off the day of competition by winning the doubles point to take the 1-0 advantage. Henrique de Brito and Thiago Drozdowski opened with a 6-2 win in the No. 3 spot, before Alcorn State won the other two matches.

The Trojans quickly flushed the early result and won four straight matches in singles to take the team victory. Luciano Alcocer leveled the score at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-2 win in the No. 6 singles spot. Hiiro Sakamoto followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win on court 4. Nicolas Simkin got Troy on the brink of the match victory with a 6-1, 6-2 win in the top singles spot. The overall victory was clinched by de Brito, who came away with a 6-3, 6-0 win on court 3.

Match 2: Troy 4, Alcorn State 0
Troy carried its strong play from the first match into the second one, quickly jumping ahead 1-0 after winning the doubles point. De Brito and Drozdowski kicked things off with a 6-1 win in the No. 3 spot. Sakamoto and Alcocer clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win in the No. 2 spot.

In singles, Troy was unstoppable. Sakamoto quickly made the Troy lead 2-0 with a win on court 4. He was leading the first set 4-0 before Alcorn State's player retired from the match. Alcocer got Troy to within one point of the match victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 6 spot.

Arbelaez closed out the day of tennis with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 4 spot to give Troy its second win of the day.

The Trojans return to action on Wednesday at the Lunsford Tennis Complex for a pair of contests against Spring Hill and Mercer. First serves are set for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
