Troy, Ala. – Troy softball faced the first of three straight Power Four opponents when it fell 8-0 to Georgia Tech in five innings on Wednesday afternoon. The Trojans (7-4) were shut down by Yellow Jackets (8-3) pitcher Sophia Voyles in the loss.
Taylor McKinney and Caiden Oliva both collected hits for Troy in the midweek game. McKinney tied the team lead for doubles with her fourth two-bagger of the season, while Oliva slapped a single to second base for her ninth hit of the season.
Troy stared down a deficit early after Georgia Tech put together a two-out rally to load the bases in the first inning. Yellow Jackets right fielder Alyssa Willer unloaded them with a triple down the first base line, and the next batter drove her in with a single. Georgia Tech finished the opening inning with a 4-0 lead.
Although McKinney smoked a double in the bottom of the first, the Trojans were unable to push a run across. The Yellow Jackets scored two more runs in the second inning, extending the lead to 6-0 after Esmee Ames entered the game in relief of Savannah Money.
The Trojans turned to Alyssa Faircloth in the third inning, and she pitched the first scoreless inning of the game after striking out a batter with two runners on. While she gave up two runs in the fourth, Faircloth struck out two more batters in the frame.
Heading into the game, Faircloth was fifth in the Sun Belt Conference in strikeouts. She moved her K/7 ratio to 8.65 with her outing against the Yellow Jackets.
The Trojans look to get back on track at the USF Tournament in Tampa, Fla., this weekend.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"Before the game started we talked about wanting to be the team that plays with a chip on their shoulder, and it looked like the opposite tonight. Georgia Tech came out and took care of business. They had a big four-run first inning and just took us out of our game. It's not the start we wanted and certainly not the conclusion we wanted."
