NEW ORLEANS, La. - Cooper Campbell was named the season's first Sun Belt Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.Â
Campbell had an impressive opening week of the season in which the sophomore guard averaged 20.0 points, 5.5 assists, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.0 steals, leading the Trojans to a pair of wins over top mid-major programs in Kent State and Furman.Â
Campbell ranked near the top of the conference in numerous statistics in the opening week – third in points per game (20.0), first in steals per game (3.0), third in three-point percentage (57.1), second in three pointers made (8.0) and third in assists per game (5.5).Â
"Cooper is extremely deserving of this honor," head coach Scott Cross said. "I don't think that he could have played any better in our two big road wins against College Insider Preseason Top 25 Mid-Major teams. He was good on offense, as the stat sheet showed, but he was also really good on defense too. I am glad that he received the recognition he deserved for his awesome week!"Â
The Puyallup, Wash., native scored 20 points, racking up eight assists and six rebounds in Troy's opening night overtime victory at Kent State. With the Trojans trailing by a basket, Campbell went end-to-end to score a game-tying layup with just one second left. In overtime, he scored seven points to secure the win.Â
"When the stakes were highest at Kent State, he stepped up to put the game into overtime and then carried us in overtime," added Cross.Â
At Furman, Campbell continued his hot start, setting a career high with 21 points. Again, he stepped up when it mattered most, and with the score tied at 55 with 90 seconds left in the game, Campbell jumped a Furman outlet pass for a steal, and laid the ball in through contact for the lead, which ended up being the deciding basket in the Troy win.Â
The honor marks Campbell's first Sun Belt Player of the Week award of his career.Â
Troy opens its home schedule Tuesday night inside Trojan Arena against Pensacola Christian. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.Â
