Troy Closes Weekend of Tournament Play

AUBURN, Ala. – The Troy men's tennis team wrapped up play at the Auburn Battle on the Plains and the Mercer Gridiron Classic after a weekend packed with matches.
"Overall, it was a very strong weekend -- especially in Auburn, being in the semifinals with three Power Four teams," said head coach Rolando Vargas. "At Mercer, we were very competitive in several spots. We're going to be in top form for regionals, and we just have to recover fast."
Although he dropped his final singles match, Ausias Martin Melo closed out the weekend 3-1 in singles play. He earned his first collegiate victory with a Power Four win on Friday and rode the momentum to a strong weekend.
On Sunday, Hiiro Sakamoto finished out his weekend with a convincing 6-1, 6-4 win over North Alabama's Alberto Altur. It was his second singles win of the tournament.
Luciano Alcocer bested Ole Miss player Kai Milburn to end his weekend, winning in 6-4, 6-3 fashion.
In Macon, Ga., the Trojans closed play with Thiago Drozdowski and Louis Boilevin taking down a duo from Mercer 7-6 (7-3).
Freshman Stephan Tavares Noale finished the weekend with a 2-1 record in singles play. Drozdowski finished with the same record, advancing all the way to the semifinals of his flight before dropping a match.
