TROY, Ala. – Shaulana Wagner tied the game with 0:14 left in regulation to send the game to overtime, and Troy took over from there, dominating Coastal Carolina in extra time, 15-7, for its first Sun Belt Conference victory, 92-84, on Thursday night in Trojan Arena.
Briana Peguero, Brianna Jackson, Ashley Baez and Wagner found their way into the scoring column in overtime as the Trojans (7-7, 1-1 SBC) shot 66.7 percent from the field and deep while shooting 83.3 percent at the line in the extra five minutes. Meanwhile, the Chanticleers (10-2, 1-1 SBC) went 0-of-3 from deep and 3-of-7 from the field to fall for the second time.
Zay Dyer joined Jackson with a 21-rebound performance to tie Sky'Lynn Holmes for fourth in Troy D-I history with the most rebounds in a single game. She also had her third 20-plus point performance with 25 to secure her seventh double-double. Leilani Guion set a new career-high with 20 points after shooting 4-of-4 from deep in the first half. She ended the night going 8-of-13 from the field. Jackson secured her third straight double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Despite the loss, Coastal Carolina converted 12 triples, including a perfect 3-of-3 performance from Mallory Bruce to end with 13 points off the bench. Jayden Marable led Coastal Carolina in scoring, ending with 17 points, three steals and six rebounds, while Savannah Brooks finished with 16 points, three steals, four assists and five rebounds. The Chanticleers shot 23.5 percent in the fourth quarter to open the door for Troy.
Overtime
Coastal Carolina took the early lead after Jackson got the assist from Briana Peguero to open overtime, 79-79. Marable followed Jackson by fighting through the contact for the and-one, 80-79, at the 0:50 mark.
Peguero heroically flipped the script, drilling a triple off an assist from Wagner to reclaim the lead, 82-80, with 3:42 remaining. The triple opened a brief 5-0 rush from the Trojans when Jackson forced the turnover by drawing the charge. A flip in possession allowed Wagner to pull up from mid-range and drill her sixth bucket at the 2:04 mark, 84-80.
Brooks cut the margin to two, 84-82, with 2:37 remaining as she drove into the paint. Neither side scored over the next 1:56 until Peguero showed her heroics again as Jackson found her at the top of the arc, and she delivered the eventual dagger, 87-82. Jackson followed Peguero, going 2-of-2 at the charity stripe, 89-82, with 0:37 left.
The Chanticleers managed one more bucket from Marable, 89-84, at the 4:32 mark. Still, Ashley Baez finished the game by going 3-of-4 at the charity stripe in the remaining seconds to secure Troy's 25th overtime victory in program history.
Fourth Quarter Rally
Troy opened the fourth quarter by extending its advantage to seven, 69-62, at the 0:15 mark, as Jackson went 1-of-2 at the line. The Chanticleers responded with a 7-0 run, tying the game at 69 with 6:57 remaining on a triple by Riley Stack.
Dyer paused the run with a layup off a Wagner assist, 71-69, to reclaim the advantage at the 3:03 mark. The Chanticleers' run wasn't finished as Alancia Ramsey hit a pair of free throws, 71-71, before Kristin Williams drilled the second-chance 3-pointer to hold a 74-71 lead.
A 2:36 scoring drought followed before Troy hit the rally. Two misses led to two offensive rebounds for the Trojans before Jackson finished the possession with a tip-in layup to cut the deficit to one, 74-73. A miss for Coastal allowed Jackson to find Dyer inside to take the 75-74 advantage with 1:33 remaining.
An and-one from Stack put the game in favor of Coastal Carolina, 77-75, at the 8:47 mark. A miss by Troy gave the Chanticleers the ball with a chance to end it, but the defensive locked in, forcing the shot clock violation to allow one more chance. After a timeout by head coach Chanda Rigby, Wagner ended with the ball and drove inside, tying the game with an and-one attempt, 77-77, with 0:14 remaining. Wagner missed the game-winner at the line, but Troy forced the miss for Coastal to force overtime and dominate in extra time.
Head Coach Chanda Rigby
"Great night in Trojan Arena, we had a great answer to bounce back from a loss on the road against JMU earlier, and we just did a great job tonight. We came out, and some players played really big. Zay bounced back with a 25-point, 21-rebound performance, and then our other post-player (Jackson) also had a double-double. We're proud of 'Stitch' because she got 20 points tonight and went 4-4 from the 3-point line in the first half, which opened things up for us in the second half, and we were able to sit in the zone the whole time. It was just a good team effort. At the beginning of the game, we were not defending very well. We played really well on offense, but we were not defending, and assistant coach Stephanie Murphy, our defensive coach, cleared a few things up and changed the defense up and things got a little bit better."
Staying Home
Troy remains in Trojan Arena for a matchup with the defending SBC champions Marshall on Saturday at 3:33 p.m.
