TROY, Ala. – The Troy men's tennis team opens its 2025 spring season with a pair of matches in Florida over the next few days, as it plays at North Florida on Saturday at 12 p.m. and at Miami on Monday morning at 9 a.m.
The Trojans are coming off an impressive 2024 season that saw it post a 19-7 (4-4 SBC) record but come up just short in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Tournament.
"We're very excited to start the season," head coach Rolando Vargas said. "I think we've had a really good week, but the only way to know how you handle the pressure is playing tough competition."
Five Trojans from last year's squad returned to Troy, including Yeray Andres Pastor, Luciano Alcocer, Noah Martens, Nicolas Simkin and Vicente Arbelaez. They combined for 51-22 singles record last season. Pastor and Martens each won 17 matches, while Alcocer won 11.
The two new additions to the team this season are Hiiro Sakamoto, who comes to Troy from Kumamoto, Japan, and Henrique de Brito, who hails from Sãu Paulo, Brazil.
In two fall tournaments, the Trojans posted a combined 25-14 record in singles and 10-5 in doubles. Alcocer was 5-1 in his singles matches, while Sakamoto and Simkin each went 5-3. In doubles, the duo of Alcocer and Sakamoto was Troy's best, as it posted a 4-1 record.
North Florida went to the NCAA Tournament last season after winning the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season and tournament titles. They return five players from their 2024 team that went 14-9 (8-0 ASUN). Miami went 11-14 last year and fell in the second round of the ACC Championship to North Carolina.
"We want to get ready and try to do big thing in the conference this season. The only way to do that is playing tough competition so we're ready to start. We got to go there and put it all on the court, fight and enjoy the moment."
