Troy Opens New Year Against Coastal Carolina

TROY, Ala. – In the friendly confines of Trojan Arena, the Troy women's basketball program invites Coastal Carolina for the first match of 2025 on Thursday, Jan. 2 at 6 p.m.
 
Troy (6-7, 0-1 SBC) is hungry to split its Sun Belt Conference record and continue its dominance over the Chanticleers (10-1, 1-0 SBC). The Trojans have won eight of their last 10 matchups against Coastal Carolina and sit 6-2 at home.

Conference Opener
The Trojans found themselves in a defensive grudge match with the Dukes of James Madison to open SBC play. After opening on a 12-0 run and limiting JMU to 11.8 percent shooting in the first 10 minutes, the opposition returned to deliver a 63-52 loss to Troy. The Trojans did their job defensively, holding JMU to 63 points on 32.4 percent shooting from the field and 15.4 from deep.
 
Brianna Jackson had a career-best performance over the Dukes, leading the team in scoring with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Her rebound game inked her name in the Troy record books as she grabbed 21 rebounds to tie Sky'Lynn Holmes for the fourth-most rebounds in a single game at the Division-I level. It also marked the first 20-plus rebound performance since Ja'Mia Hollings had 20 against South Alabama on Jan. 26, 2023. The Oklahoma State transfer secured her second straight double-double and led the team with two blocks.
 
Ashley Baez continued her scoring onslaught, and she finished with 10 points. Her double-digit performance was her 12th game with 10-plus points in 13 appearances for the Trojans. The Dominican Republic native currently sits 12th in the conference with 11.9 points per game, consistently knocking down triples with 1.4 per game for 21st in the SBC. She also ranks 16th for steals at 1.8, having a steal in the last 10 games – she has seven multi-steal games in that stretch with 21 total.
 
Shaulana Wagner led the Trojans in assists with four against James Madison while securing her second double-digit rebound performance (10). Wagner led the Trojans in scoring or assists in every game in 2024 as she leads the conference and ranks 19th nationally with 5.8 assists per game. No. 13 has dished out 5-plus assists in nine games.
 
Coastal Outlook
Coastal Carolina made short work of its nonconference competition, leading the Sun Belt Conference with a 9-1 record before returning for a 1-0 start in conference play over ULM, 63-61. The Chanticleers' lone loss came at the hands of NC State, 89-68, where they allowed the Wolfpack to shoot 50 percent from the field and convert 11 triples. Through 12 games, the Chanticleers lead the league in assist/turnover ratio (1.09), scoring defense (58.6), scoring (79.7) and steals (13.6).
 
Savannah Brooks has put the conference on watch with her scoring abilities, as she ranks second in the SBC for scoring at 15.9 points per game. She's shooting 49.6 percent from the field (second in the SBC), 33.9 percent from deep (eighth in the SBC) and 84.4 percent at the charity stripe (first in the SBC). Her defense also ranks in the conference as she swipes 2.6 steals per game for second in the conference. In the win over ULM, she produced 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal.
