Troy Baseball Run Rules No. 18 Louisiana for Seventh Straight Win, Kyle Mock Tallies Seven RBIs
5/3/2024 11:10:00 PM | Baseball
A grand slam by Mock, followed by a 2-RBI double to left center and RBI single to right field, earned him seven RBIs – first since Brooks Bryan on April 4, 2024, at Jacksonville State. The Trojans (33-14, 15-7 SBC) earned six extra-base hits, six HBPs, 13 hits and six walks as a unit.
Louisiana (33-14, 17-5 SBC) got a hot start when Luke Yuhasz led off with a double to left field on his first pitch. After a groundout to Peyton Watts, Kyle DeBarge kept the doubles going down the right field line for the first run, 1-0 – advanced to third on a throwing error. Lee Amedee brought DeBarge home on his first pitch, 2-0, dotting a sac fly out to center field.
The Trojans doubled the Cajuns' effort with one swing of the bat, 4-2, by Mock for a 359-foot grand slam – first of his career. Runners were put on after Will Butcher reached on a fielding error, and Bryan / Tremayne Cobb Jr. earned walks.
Doubles galore ensued in the second, with Kole Myers starting it with a 1-1 shot through the right side, followed by a 2-2 ball doubled down the right field line – scored Myers, 5-2. The doubles' parade continued with Bryan as he took his first pitch to right center, scoring Kavanagh, 6-2.
A 36-minute lightning delay stalled the game in the third, but Louisiana came out with its third run, 6-3, in the fourth as Duncan Pastore sent a full count bomb down the left field line.
Troy responded with five runs in the bottom half on three hits, four HBPs and two fielder's choices and wild pitches. Ethan Kavanagh started with the first HBP before Will Butcher reached on an FC and advanced on a Bryan single to right field. Then, Cobb Jr. took a 3-1 RBI single through the right side to score the No. 15, 7-3. Mock continued his day, earning two RBIs, 9-3, on a double to left center.
Louisiana made a change at the mound, but it didn't stop the Trojans as Aidan Gilroy got his 15th HBP to move him into sole possession of the 10th most in a single season before a wild pitch advanced him and scored Mock, 10-3. Two more HBPs on Ben Arnett and Watts loaded the bases, and after one out was put on the board, Kavanagh came back up to the plate and earned the walk to move Arnett home, 11-3.
A brief rally by the Ragin' Cajuns came in the top of the fifth when Trey LaFleur singled to right field, and DeBarge sent a shot to left, 11-5.
The sixth HBP for Troy came at Cobb Jr. – advanced to second on a balk – and Mock followed with his third hit and seventh RBI on a single to right field, bringing No. 3 home, 12-3.
Clete Hartzog took over the mound in the sixth and put down three straight batters via two strikeouts and a groundout to Watts, setting the stage for Troy in the bottom half. Myers earned his 56th walk and stole his 31stbase before Kavanagh battled for a full-count walk to put runners on first and second. On a 3-1 count, Butcher took the fifth pitch and shot it 356 feet over the right field wall for his 13th homer, 15-5, and put the run rule into effect. A walk for Bryan and a Cobb Jr. single allowed Gilroy to tack one more, 16-5, on Troy's 32nd sac fly to center field. From there, Hartzog finished the Cajuns, striking one out before getting the groundout and fly out to clinch game one.
Garrett Gainous (2-2) led the charge on the mound, earning his second win of 2024 with five innings pitched and striking out five. Meanwhile, Hartzog came in for two innings of relief, allowing zero runs and hits with three strikeouts to boost.
Head Coach Skylar Meade
"It's a great night here at RPF. I know we had that lightning delay right at the beginning that delayed us a half hour. But thank goodness it was only 30 minutes because it allowed us to have Gainous go back into the game, and I thought it settled him down in a way—just a relentless effort by our guys tonight. We know what a great team Louisiana has, and we're already thinking about the changes and adjustments the Cajuns will make for game two. It was a great game in all facets. We took advantage of some balls that got away from them, and Mock was tremendous, with seven RBIs. He was just hitting it all over the park. His grand slam got this place going.
