MADISON, Miss. – Troy entered Wednesday's final round of the Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship in position for a berth in the match play portion of the event, but Troy slipped five spots and finished in ninth place, seven shots off a playoff position, following the final round at the Annandale Golf Club.
Jake Springer turned in a top-10 finish for the Trojans as he tied for seventh place for the week, shooting 1-over after closing the tournament with a 2-over 74 on Wednesday. He carded 11 birdies over his three rounds, tied for the eighth most in the field, while his teammate Nick Fowlkes tied for fifth with 12 birdies.
All five of Troy's golfers finished among the top 18 in the field for birdies, as Brantley Scott added 10, while Pablo Gracia and George Burch had nine each. Springer led the field, shooting 1-under on the par-3 holes (only golfer under par), while Fowlkes and Gracia were 5-under on the par-5 holes, tied for seventh best in the field.
Starting on No. 10, Troy made the turn at 1-over as a team, its best collective score of the week on holes 10 thru 18. However, the Trojans shot 4-over on their back nine for the day after shooting 2-over and 4-under in each of the first two rounds on holes one thru nine.
Arkansas State maintained its lead throughout the tournament and won the stroke play portion of the event by 11 shots over ULM. The Red Wolves will take on No. 4 seed Texas State in the match play semifinals, while ULM will square off against No. 3 Marshall.
Scott tied for 27th place overall at 6-over for the tournament after carding a 1-over 73 on Wednesday; he carded a trio of birdies on the day, shooting even on his back-nine.
Fowlkes and Burch tied for 36th place at 9-over after the pair shot matching rounds of 75 on Wednesday. Fowlkes had a pair of birdies, both on his front nine, while Burch had two on the front and one on the par-4 third. Gracia finished a shot back of that par in a tie for 42nd, a 16-spot improvement from day two, after shooting 1-under in the final round, thanks to four birdies.
