Martinez Highlights Troy Men’s Tennis on All-Sun Belt Teams

TROY, Ala. – Troy sophomore Mario Martinez Serrano has been named the Sun Belt Player to Watch for a second consecutive season in addition to landing on the All-Sun Belt First Team in singles. Additionally, Carles Anton and Yeray Andres Pastor were named to the All-Sun Belt Second Team in doubles.
Martinez enters this week's Sun Belt Tournament with a league-best 23 wins, including a 6-2 mark in Sun Belt play, all coming on court one. He appeared in the national rankings earlier this spring after picking up ranked victories over opponents from Jacksonville State and South Florida.
He has dominated his opponents all season, winning 20 of his 23 matches in straight sets, while both of his losses have come in three sets. In league play, Martinez allowed opponents to win an average of just 4.67 games in his six victories, as he dropped just 28 combined games. Martinez was also strong in doubles down the stretch as he and partner Luciano Alcocer posted a 14-1 record, including 7-1 mark in league play.
The Player to Watch award is presented to the highest vote-getter from the Player of the Year voting that has eligibility remaining for the following year and did not win the award.
Anton and Pastor helped transform Troy's doubles game over the final half of the season, as they were 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the Sun Belt. Since becoming doubles partners, Troy has won the doubles point in 13 of 15 matches, and they are unbeaten in their last eight matches.
Troy opens the Sun Belt Tournament play on Friday at 1 p.m. against No. 3 seed Georgia State.
