Trojans Struggle In Loss To Southern Miss

Troy, Ala. – The Troy softball team lost the final game of the series against Southern Miss at the Troy Softball Complex. The Trojans struggled throughout the game on both sides of the ball and fell 10-1 after five innings.
Troy found itself with an early 1-0 lead after Libby Baker blasted her seventh home run of the season. However, this lead will be short-lived due to a Golden Eagle five spot in the next inning.
Graduate senior Hannah Borden started the rally by launching the first pitch she saw in the frame over the left center field wall. Southern Miss kept piling on with a series of base hits and wild pitches and before the Trojans could catch their breath, they were down 5-1.
The next inning would be much of the same. The Golden Eagles would pile on four more runs, highlighted by a three-run homer by junior outfielder Natalie Taylor.
Junior pitcher Jana Lee shut down the high-powered Trojan offense. The Albany, Georgia native threw all five innings where she limited Troy to one run off three hits.
Although Baker struggled from the circle for the Trojans, the two-way senior went a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate with that solo shot in the second inning. Baker is now up to a .404 batting average on the year with seven home runs, six doubles and 33 RBIs.
Thoughts from Coach Newell
"We didn't play Troy softball today. It's a little disappointing but we will get better. Everything is fixable and that's what we are here for. Defensively, we weren't sharp, and I think that bled into other aspects of the game. When you get down big like that, it's hard to rally back. We got to flush this game and work on our mistakes. We are looking ahead to a tough ACC program in Georgia Tech and a top 25 team in the nation with Texas State."
Up Next:
Troy will travel to the peach state to compete in a midweek contest against Georgia Tech.
