Ranked Showdown on Tap for Troy’s SBC Men’s Tennis Opener

TROY, Ala. – Winners of six straight, Troy travels to No. 48 Old Dominion on Wednesday at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center in the Sun Belt opener for both clubs; first serve is set for noon (CT).

Troy (14-2) defeated Tennessee State, 4-3, on Monday to run its home record to a perfect 9-0 while extending the winning streak to six straight matches, its longest of the season – the Trojans opened the season winning its first five matches. Troy had been ranked each of the last two weeks but fell out of the Top 75 this week despite not losing a match.

Success starts at the top for the Trojans, where reigning Sun Belt Player to Watch Mario Martinez Serrano enters league play 16-0 on the season and as the No. 71 singles player in the country. The Monarchs have had success from their No. 1 spot, with brothers Codie and Connor van Schalkwyk combining for a 10-3 mark.

Noah Martens and Carles Anton have split work on courts two and three, with Martens posting a 7-2 mark in his last nine matches. Court four has belonged to Benjamin Ambrosio for the majority of the season, while Yeray Andres Pastor (12-2) and Luciano Alcocer (8-1) have dominated on the lower courts.

The first point of the match will more than likely be one of the most important, with Troy posting a 28-1 record the past two seasons when winning the doubles point. The Trojans will have their work cut out for them as ODU comes in with a 22-7 dual match record this spring in doubles, but Troy is 13-1 the last six matches after a lineup change from head coach Rolando Vargas.

Old Dominion (10-4) has three of its last four matches – all to ranked teams – entering Sun Belt play, but the win was a 4-2 victory over No. 51 Boise State.
