BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Eight hours. 18 innings. 43 runs. It was a wild afternoon at Indiana's Bart Kaufman Field, but once the dust settled, Troy left town with a series victory over the Hoosiers after splitting a doubleheader on Sunday.
Troy's All-Americans rose to the top in the rubber game as Shane Lewis homered twice and closer Noah Manning tossed 3.1 scoreless innings as the Trojans (12-5) held off the Hoosiers (9-6), 15-11, in the finale of a marathon day at the ballpark.
Lewis and Blake Sutton hit back-to-back home runs in a 4-run second inning for the Trojans before Indiana scored six unanswered runs to take a 6-4 lead. Sutton and Lewis finished with four RBIs each and were among the five Trojans who finished the game with multiple hits.
Will Butcher, who hit three home runs in the series opener Saturday, kickstarted a 6-run fifth inning, drawing an 11-pitch walk and chasing Indiana starter Brayden Risedorph from the game.
Tremayne Cobb Jr. plated Butcher with a single and Peyton Watts followed with a 2-run single to tie the game at 6-all. Aidan Gilroy drew a bases loaded walk to put Troy in front, Ethan Kavanagh beat out an infield single to plate a run and Butcher drew his second walk of the inning to cap the scoring.
Indiana answered with four in the bottom of the frame sparked by a 2-run double from Nick Mitchell, tying the game at 10-all.
Lewis made sure the lead was short-lived turning on a 1-1 offering from Drew Buhr and depositing it 475 feet over the wall in right field for a 3-run homer.
Leading by two and the heart of the Indiana order due up in the ninth, Sutton gave the Trojans a pair of key insurance runs with a 2-run double to the wall in right field after two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases.
Manning inherited a mess in the sixth as the Hoosiers had two runners on and Mitchell ahead in the count 2-1. After finishing the walk to Mitchell, Manning got Preseason Big Ten Player of the Year Devin Taylor to foul out with the bases loaded to get out of the inning.
The Trojan closer struck out three and scattered a pair of hits over his 3.1 scoreless innings to pick up his first save of the season. Michael Osmond (2-0) allowed a pair of unearned runs in 1.2 innings to pick up the win.
Buhr (0-1) was sacked with the loss for Indiana after allowing three runs – two earned – in 1.2 innings of work after he took over for Grant Holderfield, who surrendered five runs without recording an out.
In the opener, Troy jumped out to a 5-2 lead thanks to a 5-spot in the third on a sac fly from Brooks Bryan, a 2-run single by Watts and a 2-run double by Kyle Mock. The lead was short-lived, as Indiana answered with five in the home half of the frame, sparked by a 2-run homer from Carter Mathison and a 2-run double by Joey Brenczewski.
The Trojans got one back in the sixth on an RBI single from Ethan Kavanagh and Kole Myers added his seventh home run in the season in the eighth, but it was not enough as the Hoosier took the game 10-7.
Jack Moffit (1-0) restored order in the Indiana bullpen with 3.2 strong innings, holding Troy to just an unearned run, while Grayson Stewart (0-2) allowed six runs over 2.2 innings to take the loss.
Myers scored three times and recorded three hits to lead Troy's offense in the opener.
Quotable – Head Coach Skylar Meade
"That was a really good team; they had really good stuff on the mound and some great players. The story of the bus ride to Huntsville is going to be Ringer (Noah Manning) coming in for the last 10 outs, shutting it down, and someone saying enough is enough. We didn't play our greatest baseball; this was a unique weekend. It was 28 degrees; it wasn't simple to do, just a great job offensively by the guys; happy to see Shane get it going with the two big home runs."
