The Trojans, who fell to No. 15 Houston last Tuesday, got a much-needed win on Saturday over the Knights to get themselves back in the win column a week before conference play gets going. It wasn't the cleanest showing from Troy, but it shot the ball well – 49.2 percent from the field – and played a suffocating defense that held Middle Georgia State to 31.3 percent from the field.
Jackson Fields had a game-high 13 points on 5-7 shooting to lead Troy. Also joining him in double-figures was Myles Rigsby with 11 points. The sophomore forward has now scored 10-plus points in nine of ten game this season and leads the team with 12.6 points per game.
Rigsby also had a game-high five steals, tying his career-high which he set last season. The Trojans forced the Knights into 21 turnovers, 13 of which came on steals. Troy had 29 points off turnovers, while Middle Georgia State had just 13.
Keep on Building
Three of Troy's four losses this season have come against teams who are currently in the Ap Poll. Oregon, who is ranked No. 10, is the highest of the three. Houston stayed put at No. 15, while Arkansas is the second-highest receiving votes team just outside of the top 25.
The Trojans key to success has been offense this season, as Troy is 6-0 this season when scoring 70 or more points, and 4-0 when shooting 50 percent or better.
As the Trojans get ready for conference play, it will look to continue to create havoc on the defensive side of the ball. Troy leads the conference and is 59th nationally in turnovers forced per game at 14.9. Much of the Trojan's forced turnovers have come on steals. Troy's 9.9 steals per game is first in the Sun Belt and 22nd in the country. Tayton Conerway's 28 total steals is ninth in the country and leads the conference.
