BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Maria Guirguis went a perfect 2-0 in her singles and doubles play as the Troy women's tennis program kickstarted its fall tournament season against Jacksonville State and Samford at the Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavilion.
Singles competition opened the day, and five Trojans competed, with four coming out victorious. Guirguis made short work of her opposition, dominating the first set, 6-1. Samford's Meredith Taylor battled, but Guirguis was too much, so she took the 6-3 sweep. She took her dominance into doubles competition with Valeriia Avdeeva, winning 6-2.
Leena Metwally and Emilia Namyslo took their first set 6-1 and 6-2, respectively, before falling in the second for singles. The third set for Metwally saw her shine, taking down Libby Blair, 10-3. Namyslo and Grace Keller went back and forth, but the Germany native proved clutch with a 10-8 win. Last year's singles champion, Gabrielle Leslie, found herself down in her first set, 6-1, but proved too much as she took the following two sets, 6-3 and 10-4.
Tomorrow's action opens tomorrow with doubles competition at 10 a.m.
