Sakamoto, Alcocer Advance to Semifinals in Doubles Competition on Day One of Mercer Gridiron Classic

MACON, Ga. – At the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center, the Troy men's tennis team dominated day one of the Mercer Gridiron Classic, led by Hiiro Sakamoto and Luciano Alcocer's route through Chattanooga and Mercer in doubles.
The pair of Sakamoto and Alcocer dominated Chattooga's Jaxon Lamb / Carson Gompert in the first round, 6-3, before taking it to Mercer to finish off a 2-0 day in doubles and advance to the semifinals.
In singles play, five Trojans found their way to advance. Yeray Andres Pastor dominated Daniel Garcia from Middle Georgia State with a 6-4, 6-0 sweep, followed by Vicente Arbelaez Prati (6-1, 6-2) over Middle Georgia State and Alcocer over Howell Burns (7-5, 6-4).
Sakamoto found himself in a battle against Alabama State's Lun Obrul in the first set. Tied 6-6, Sakamoto fought his way into a 7-5 win to take the set, 7-6. He took the momentum into set two, winning 6-4 to advance. Meanwhile, de Brito took his first set 6-3 before falling in his second 6-4. He continued the fight into the match-deciding set and won, 7-5.
The quarterfinal round of singles opens at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday while Sakamoto and Alcocer aim for the finals at 8:30 a.m.
