Three Trojans Advance on Day One of ITA Southern Regional

BATON ROUGE, La. – Vicente Arbelaez, Hiiro Sakamoto and Nicolas Simkin went 2-0 in the qualifying round to stay alive in the ITA Southern Regional on Wednesday at the LSU Tennis Complex.
Day one saw the Trojans go 7-2 in singles play during the qualifying round as Arbelaez (7-5, 6-2) and Sakamoto (6-3, 6-1) swept their competition in the first round. Luciano Alcocer fought with Tulane's Vicent Vohl after losing the first set, 6-3. He rebounded with back-to-back set wins to advance, 6-1, 6-3. Simkin saw a similar route to the next round, coming back from a 6-3 loss in the first set to win sets two and three, 6-1, 7-5 – saw his chance at the main draw fall away in round two on a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) loss.
Round two had three set battles for all four Trojans, with Arbelaez securing his first set with a close 7-5 result. The senior fell in set two, 6-3, but bounced back to secure the victory on a 6-2 win in set three. Set one and two saw the script flipped as Sakamoto won the first 6-2 and fell in set two 6-1. However, set three was all Sakamoto with a 6-3 win. Simkin won his first set 6-2 but fell in the second set 6-2 to tie the match at one apiece. Set three left no question for Simkin as he dominated for a 6-1 victory.
Doubles competition opens on day two of the ITA Southern Regional at 9 a.m. with Noah Martens, Yeray Andres Pastor, Alcocer and Sakamoto.
