TROY, Ala. – Troy softball prepares for a three-game week that includes two at the Troy Softball Complex against Chipola (Wednesday, Oct. 16 – 5 p.m.) and Snead (Friday, Oct. 18 – 5 p.m.) before hitting the road to Shirley Clements Mewborn Field for Georgia Tech (Sunday, Oct. 20 – 1 p.m.).
"We play these games to bring out resiliency and grit," head coach Eric Newell said. "We play to get better and learn from mistakes. It's important to show these girls that we are at the highest level and must continue improving and getting better. We need to strive for more. This week, we have three games we are looking to build on and keep that improvement going the right way."
Game Information
Who: Chipola / Snead / Georgia Tech
Where: Troy, Ala. – Troy Softball Complex / Troy, Ala. – Troy Softball Complex / Atlanta, Ga. – Shirley Clements Mewborn Field
When: Wednesday, Oct. 16 – 5 p.m. / Friday, Oct. 18 – 5 p.m. / Sunday, Oct. 20 – 1 p.m.
Week Two Recap
Game one against Central Alabama saw the Troy offense erupt in the third with four runs and continued with five over the next three innings to end with an 11-4 victory. Cassidy Boltz was perfect, going 4-for-4 at the plate, including two runs and RBIs. Reese Green, Taylor McKinney, Kayden Dunn, Annie Orman, Mia Tidmore and Reaghan Oney ended with multi-hit games as Troy finished with 23.
Florida State got the hot start on Sunday with 10 runs in the first four innings. However, Troy flipped the script in the fifth with a three-run response to cut the deficit to 10-3. They continued to trickle down the margin, fighting to an 11-5 result against the 2024 Tallahassee Regional winner. Green and Dunn repeated with a second straight multi-hit game, while Sarah Beth Brake joined them with a 2-for-3 outing.
"We were fortunate to host two games this past week," Newell said. "Against Central Alabama, we played most aspects of the game very well. We pitched well and had over 20 hits with back-to-back-to-back homers, which is very exciting. I thought our ability to steal bases needed to improve, and it's something we must concentrate on in practice. On Sunday, we showed improvement with better baserunning. We took it on the chin early but showed a lot of grit and determination to fight back. Our girls battled hard, and I think a break here or there would've made in a barnburner."
Chipola
When Wednesday hits, Chipola would've competed in five ball games, including a pair of Power-4 schools in Auburn and Florida State. The Indians lost their top hitter from the 2024 season, Amari Brown, who ended with a team-high 60 hits, 43 RBIs and a .368 batting average. They return the second-in-command, Diana Arcay, entering her sophomore season after a 2024 season with 57 hits, 36 RBIs and a .538 slugging percentage.
Snead
Snead's had a busy fall schedule with 15 games played and Montevallo remaining on the schedule for Wednesday before its matchup with Troy on Friday. The Parsons' top returner sat second for their roster in 2024 with a .372 batting average on 45 hits in 121 at-bats. Snead lacks its top base runner from 2024, who stole 44 bases and secured 96 total bases, which accounted for 51.8 percent of the team's steals.
Georgia Tech
Six games into its fall schedule and one more against Jacksonville State before Sunday, Georgia Tech comes off a 2024 season where the program finished 32-23, 13-13 ACC en route to the ACC semifinals – lost to No. 2 Florida State, 10-2 (5 innings). The Yellow Jackets finished 2024 atop the ACC in double player per game (0.45), while Mallorie Black led the league individually at 0.33.
