Men’s Tennis Downs Florida Gulf Coast in Opener

FT. MYERS, Fla. – Troy men's tennis opened its spring season with a 5-2 victory over defending A-Sun Conference champion Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday afternoon at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
Troy (1-0) took the doubles point and won the first three singles matches to clinch the victory with a 4-0 advantage. Winning doubles was critical to Troy's success last season, with the Trojans posting a 14-1 record in such matches.
Benjamin Ambrosio and Noah Martens clinched the doubles point for the Trojans with a 6-4 win on court three. It was a key victory for Troy with the doubles courts tied at 1-all; Mario Martinez Serrano and Carles Anton opened with a 6-4 win on court two, but the Eagles answered, winning 7-5 on court one.
Nicolas Simkin put the Trojans up 2-0 with a commanding victory on court six, winning 6-2, 7-5, and Martens pulled Troy within a court of the victory, winning 6-2, 6-4 on court four. The Sun Belt favorite for Player of the Year, Martinez made quick work on court one, 7-5, 6-2, to clinch the match for Troy; Martinez improved to 21-3 in his career during dual matches.
Florida Gulf Coast (0-1) pulled within a 4-2 margin with wins on courts three and two before Yeray Andres Pastor closed out the scoring with a three-set victory on court five for the Trojans.
Troy returns to action Sunday against Buffalo at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
