Troy Tennis Has Strong First Day at Samford Invitational

Birmingham, Ala. – The Troy women's tennis team opened its fall season on Friday at the Samford Invitational competing against Tulane in doubles and Central Arkansas in singles.
The Trojans had a strong day going 2-1 in doubles against Tulane and 6-1 against UCA in singles.
In doubles, Maria Guirguis and Emilia Namyslo defeated Tulane's Jiayun Zhu and Cora Barber, 6-4. The duo of Leena Metwally and Gabrielle Leslie also took down Tulane's Sean Mullen and Brooke Theis, 6-3. Tulane's Lahari Yelamanchili and Kristen Borland picked up a 6-4 win over Kristina Kukaras and Hagar Ramadan-Amin.
Troy also took part in an Individual doubles match against Samford, with the Bulldogs duo of Grace Keller and Lauren Waddles defeating Troy's Valeriia Avdeeva and Olivia Elliott, 6-2.
In singles, Troy found a lot of success, winning six of its seven matchups against UCA. Kukaras defeated UCA's Vichitraporn Vimuktananda, 6-3, 6-7, (10-6). Amin took down Sumomo Hamanaga, 6-0, 6-3. Metwally picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win over Fuka Nonoyama. Leslie won 6-1, 6-3 over Ting-An Chen. Avdeeva bested Harune Shigemasu, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, to get Troy's fifth singles win.
Elliott defeated Seohyun Park, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
UCA's Konoma Miyakawa defeated Guirguis, 6-4, 7-5, for Troy's only singles loss of the afternoon.
The Trojan's final singles win of the day came courtesy of Namyslo, who defeated Annie Holt of Samford, 6-2, 6-0.
Troy is back in action for day two of the invitational on Saturday morning when they take on Samford in doubles at 10 a.m., before facing off against Tulane in singles at 1 p.m.
