TROY, Ala. – Jake Springer led the Troy men's golf program on day one of the Argent Financial Classic, shooting one shot under par after his first 18 holes on Sunday afternoon.
Troy sits in 14th after shooting 299 on the day, competing against 15 programs. As a unit, the Trojans totaled 13 birdies with the 546-yard ninth hole, seeing three Trojans, George Burch, Lee Poppell and Pablo Gracia, go under par.
Central Arkansas paced the field with 279 to sit nine under par, followed by Louisiana as the only other team to shoot below 288.
Springer slipped early on hole No. 1, shooting his sole bogey on the front nine. The junior rebounded nicely with back-to-back birdies to sit one under par. He proceeded to maintain that advantage with seven straight par shots. Springer continued to shine, following up two bogeys with another pair of birdies to remain the only Trojan under par through day one.
In his collegiate debut, Poppell impressed for the Trojans when he started his front nine with one birdie on hole No. 9 and seven straight par shots to open the day. The freshman kept the momentum going into the back nine with two holes under par, including a birdie on hole 17 to remain in the hunt tied for 33rd at one above par.
Fellow freshman Gracia rebounded huge in his final nine holes after sitting three above-par through nine. Gracia totaled seven even-par holes in the back nine to drop to 2-above at 77.
Brantley Scott and Burch rounded out the Trojans, tied for 75th and 78th, respectively. Both players combined for five birdies and 14 even-par holes.
Day two sees the Trojans aim to mount their comeback on Monday morning, with Burch opening at 8:30.
