TROY, Ala. – After narrowly missing out on an at-large selection into the NCAA Championship, the Troy men's golf team has accepted an invitation to the inaugural National Golf Invitational at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona, May 18-21.
Â
"We are excited to be a part of this inaugural postseason event," head coach Forrest Schultz said. "A tournament like this has been long overdue in our sport. You have so many teams on the bubble that get knocked out due to automatic qualifiers. This tournament will allow us to showcase our university and team against schools we will never see during the regular season. Ultimately talking with Athletics Director Brent Jones, we felt like our team earned and deserved this opportunity.Â
Â
"We probably made the biggest move in country ranking-wise this spring, moving from 113 to 72 at one point, and up until three days ago, we had a shot at a team at-large bid. This will be a great way to wrap up the season for these guys, specifically our seniors, Will McFadden and Nick Bormann, who have poured everything into our program."
Â
Backed by Golfweek, the NGI features the top 15 teams in the country using a combination of Golfstat and Golfweek/Sagrin rankings. Troy finished in a tie for third place at the Sun Belt Championship last week, making match play for the first time since 2017.
Â
"This is something I have talked about for many years and am extremely excited to make this a reality. Many coaches over that time have expressed a want and a need for a second postseason event like we see in other sports and the sport is ready to support another postseason tournament," Tournament Director and Golfweek writer Lance Ringler said. "With the NCAA now allowing teams to play in one postseason event, teams that don't find a path to the NCAA regional play can now look at what we are doing as an option."
Â
Troy finished the season ranked No. 75 according to Golfstat, and the final at-large team earning an NCAA bid was ranked 66th. The winner of the NIG is granted a team exception into the Maui Jim Intercollegiate, which featured some of the nation's top teams last year, including No. 3 Arizona State, No.7 Florida State, No. 11 Georgia Tech, No. 12 Tennessee and No. 13 Auburn.
