TROY, Ala. – A successful outing at the Sun Belt Outdoor Championship led to a trinity of Troy Trojans earning Sun Belt All-Conference Teams, the league office announced Thursday afternoon.
Javon Osbourne leads the trio with a first-team selection for his results in both the discus and shot put events. Behind him is Cole Stewart, with his silver medal performance in the men's javelin throw. Finally, Morgan Reese rounds out the three with a third-team selection after his men's hammer throw result.
"I am very proud of our All-Sun Belt athletes," Director of track & field / cross country Marc Davis said. "This conference is very good, and these kids stepped up to the challenge. The future is very bright for these athletes."
With his fifth gold medal of 2023, Osbourne dominated the shot put event for first team, obliterating his personal record for the second-farthest throw in program history at 18.40m. His first throw secured a top five at 15.61m before his event-winning throw on the second attempt. He followed his performance on day three in the discus event for a third-place finish. The sophomore teased a second-place finish after his second throw but eventually slid to third with a mark of 54.78m.
Stewart made his second consecutive second team with another silver medal in the javelin throw. Before day one, the junior's top throw of 2023 came at the Crimson Tide Invitational for third at 62.61m. On his first throw, Stewart closed in on his season-best with a 62.02m mark which was enough for first. The Auburn native fought for the gold against ULM's Callan Saldutto, hitting a personal record 67.44m – previous best was 67.36m in 2022. In the end, Stewart claimed his seventh podium finish at second.
On the third team, Reese performed in the hammer throw for Troy's first podium finish of the championship meet. Throw No. 1 saw Reese hit the 54.33m mark for fourth. But on his second attempt, the thrower began his improvement to 56.61m before peaking on his final attempt at 58.46m for third.
Two of the three Trojans in Osbourne and Stewart continue their season on May 24 when they compete in the NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville, Fla.
