HUNTINGTON, W.V. – Behind a career-high 6.2 innings pitched from Logan Ross and Ethan Kavanagh's first career home run as a Trojan, Troy (35-17, 15-11) came away with a 6-3 victory over Marshall Saturday afternoon to win their 35th game of the season.
The 35 wins are the most by a Trojan team since 2018 when they won 42 and advanced to a NCAA Regional. The win is also the Trojans' 15th in Sun Belt Conference play which matches last season's total with four games still to go in the regular season.
In his sixth start of the season, Ross (4-1) went more than six innings for the first time in his career while only allowing three runs on seven hits with only one walk and six strikeouts to earn the win.
The Trojan bullpen followed Ross and did their job with Matt Mercer and Noah Manning combining to go 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball while only giving up two hits. Those two hits came in the bottom on the ninth, but just as he did yesterday, Manning stranded both runners and earned his Sun Belt-leading ninth save of the season. It is the third time this season Manning has gotten a save in consecutive games.
Coming into Saturday, Kavanagh had 57 hits, nine doubles, two triples, and 31 RBIs: all that was missing was a home run. But that all changed in the top of the fifth; Kavanagh got his big hit, a two-run shot to right-center field to extend the Trojan lead to 6-1 for his first home run as a Troy player.
Kavanagh was also solid defensively in right field as he made a couple of running grabs to prevent runs from being scored and the possibility of big innings.
Caleb Bartolero had two RBIs on the day to go along with two hits as he hit his 50th career double to score the Trojans' first run and his 13th home run of the season in the top of the fifth. With the double, Bartolero becomes only the sixth Trojan in program history to amass 50 doubles in their career.
William Sullivan had his team-leading seventh three-hit game of the season, and Clay Stearns and Donovan Whibbs each had an RBI and scored a run.
For Marshall (16-33, 5-21), their losing streak extends to 11 games as Herd starter Raymond Pacella (0-7) threw 127 pitches in seven innings allowing all six Trojan runs on seven hits, four walks, and seven strikeouts.
Shortstop Gio Ferraro drove in two of three Herd runs with a home run in the bottom of the sixth, but nothing more would come for the hosts. Luke Edwards had a two-hit game with an RBI single coming in the bottom of the third to cut into the Trojan lead, a lead Troy never relinquished.
The Trojans will go for the series sweep against Marshall as the third and final game of the weekend is set for Sunday, May 14, at 12 p.m.
