MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Day one of the Sun Belt Outdoor Championship at the Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium was highlighted by Cole Stewart and Morgan Reese for Troy with a pair of podium finishes on Thursday afternoon.
Reese started the Trojans with a bronze medal finish in the men's hammer throw. His first throw reached the 54.33m mark to place him fourth, behind Arkansas State, Appalachian State and South Alabama. However, Reese improved on his second throw at 56.61m before peaking on his final attempt with a throw of 58.46m for third. Tristan Boatman also claimed a top-10 finish in the event with a 52.59m throw on his second attempt.
Stewart kept the momentum rolling in the throwing events with the javelin. The junior temporarily claimed the gold medal on his first attempt when he threw to the 62.02m mark – 0.97m ahead of Callan Saldutto (ULM). However, Saldutto was able to seize the lead on the second throw and held it. But it wasn't without a fight from Stewart, who peaked with a personal best on his fifth throw at 67.44m for second.
Bennett Brake also had an impressive showing for the men with a fifth-place finish in the 1,500m. Brake finished with a time of 3:58.28 for his second-best of the outdoor season. All the results place the men in a two-way tie for fourth with 14 points.
