4/7/2023 9:20:00 AM | Tennis (M)
TROY, Ala. – Troy men's tennis closes out its home schedule with a pair of Sun Belt matches at the Lunsford Tennis Complex. The original schedule has been alerted to due to the threat of rain and now has the Trojans playing Georgia State on Sunday and Georgia Southern on Monday.
First serve against the Panthers on Sunday is slated for 1 p.m., and the match against the Eagles on Monday, which will be Troy's Senior Day, will begin at 1 p.m. Admission is free to all Troy tennis matches.
Troy (14-5, 2-3 SBC) enters the final stretch of Sun Belt matches fighting for seeding in the league tournament. The Trojans are a match and a half behind the Eagles for fourth in the league and up a match (plus the tiebreaker) on James Madison for fifth.
All three of the Trojans' losses in league play have come by the slimmest of margins, dropping each by 4-3 scores. The key has been doubles for Troy; the Trojans are 2-1 in league play when winning doubles but 0-2 when dropping the opening point.
Freshman Mario Martinez Serrano leads the Sun Belt with 15 wins on the season and his .833 winning percentage (15-3), while Carles Anton is second in the league with 13 wins and an .812 winning percentage (13-3). Martinez is one of just three players in the league on court one with double-digit victories, and Anton is the lone player on court two in the league to reach 10-plus wins.
The Trojans also boast the best No. 6 player in the league in Vito Llinares, where he has a Sun Belt-best eight victories and a .727 winning percentage (8-3) among players with at least six decisions.
Georgia State (4-14, 1-3) enters the weekend coming off its first league victory, a 5-2 decision over Coastal Carolina, which snapped a six-match losing streak. On the other hand, Georgia Southern (14-4, 3-1) has won 11 of its last 12 matches.
