TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – An impressive showing on the men's side led to three podium finishes in the Sam Bailey Stadium for Troy this weekend at the Crimson Tide Invitational.
A team-high eighth podium finish came through Javon Osbourne in the shot put event. In a two-event meet for the sophomore, Osbourne opened the meet in the discus throw. After hanging around in eighth through three throws at 51.10m, he hit the 53.78m mark on his fourth to jump to third. However, Will Dibo bumped him from the podium on a 54.50m throw to finish fourth.
Osbourne grabbed a podium finish in the shot put event while facing 24 competitors. On his second throw, Osbourne threw to the 17.44m mark to take a brief lead. Unfortunately, Brett Norton from Indiana State tossed a 17.69m throw on his third attempt to overtake Osbourne for a silver medal.
With his third podium finish and first since March 25 at the Weems Baskin Invitational, Jaggerd Moore grabbed second place in the high jump event. The freshman got through the 1.95m, 2.00m and 2.05m marks at ease in his first attempts to secure the podium finish. However, when attempting the 2.10m jump, Moore failed his first two attempts before making the jump – one of two competitors to succeed. Facing Dontavious Hill from Auburn in the 2.14m mark, Moore failed his three attempts to close the day in second.
Cole Stewart was the final podium finish in the javelin throw. The thrower made his presence known early with a 62.11m throw on his first attempt to become one of three competitors to hit the 60-plus mark. In second place, he and Tripp Marcus from Samford made their third throw. Stewart peaked with a 62.61m throw, but Marcus nailed a 67.11m throw to drop Stewart to third for his first bronze of 2023.
The women's side saw solid finishes inside the top 10, but the women's long jump is where two Trojans found their way into the top eight. The long jump saw Alejandra Gutierrez Fuente and Kady Schwietz grab a seventh and eighth, respectively. Gutierrez Fuente waited until her final jump to rise to seventh as she leaped to the 5.58m mark. Schwietz's peak came on her fourth jump as the freshman reached the 5.52m mark.
The regular season finale kicks off on Thursday for the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, which continues into Saturday night.
