TROY, Ala. – The Troy softball program looks to bounce back from two straight losses when it resumes Sun Belt Conference play this weekend at Veterans Memorial Park against James Madison.
The weekend's three-day series marks the first time the Trojans (28-11-1, 9-2-1 SBC) and Dukes (21-12, 6-6 SBC) matchup in program history as the opposition continues their first season in the Sun Belt.
Game Information
Location: Harrisonburg, Va. – Veterans Memorial Park
The Matchup: Troy (28-11-1, 9-2-1 SBC) vs. James Madison (21-12, 6-6 SBC)
When: Game One: Friday, April 14 – 10 a.m., Game Two: Saturday, April 15 – 9 a.m., Game Three: Sunday, April 16 – 9 a.m.
Ranked Loss
The Trojans are fresh off their second straight loss at the hands of No. 24-ranked Auburn on Wednesday night, 7-5. A quick start saw Troy tied with the ranked opponent through two innings after Libby Baker and Audra Thompson homers.
Katie Lively knocked Troy's third homer of the game in the top of the seventh, but a 7-4 lead heading into the inning was too large of a gap. Overall, it was a dramatic improvement on the first meeting between the teams at Troy earlier in 2023 when the Tigers won 11-0.
First-Time Matchup
James Madison's last six games haven't gone the Dukes' way besides a 9-0 run rule over Georgia State on April 6. Outside that game, JMU is 0-5, being outscored by GSU and Louisiana 32-13.
April 7 saw the Panthers of GSU lead from first pitch, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first before scoring a third in the fourth. A homer by Reed Butler avoided the blank sheet for the Dukes as they lost 3-1 to drop the series.
Positioned seventh in the SBC standings, JMU stands out on the offensive end with a .282 batting average which ranks fourth in the league. The Dukes also rank third in the conference in doubles at 52, with KK Mathis having 10 through 100 at-bats. In the field, JMU also has the second-best fielding percentage in the SBC at 97.1 percent.
Outside of being the team's leading doubles hitter, which also ranks fifth in the SBC, Mathis also sits eighth in the league for RBIs at 31. Hannah Shifflett joins her in the batters best with four triples, a 1.076 OPS and eight homers, ranking fourth, ninth and seven in the SBC, respectively. Alissa Humphrey is JMU's ace pitcher with 101 innings pitched. The junior has an 8-7 record, striking out an SBC third-most 30 batters looking.
