The Trojans (3-1) exploded for six runs in the sixth against the Lions (3-1) but couldn't complete a four-run comeback against the Mocs (1-2). Ella Cunningham continued her four-game RBI streak, collecting one in each game off three total hits.
Abby Lovell surrendered just one run over five innings against the Lions in her first career start. Her six strikeouts in the game were the most by a Troy freshman since Alyssa Faircloth got six on Mar. 19, 2024.
TROY 10, North Alabama 2
Troy started the day using a monster six-run sixth inning to run-rule North Alabama 10-2. The Trojans bested the previously undefeated Lions behind a shutdown performance from true freshman Abby Lovell (1-0) and 16 hits from the offense.
Kyye Ricks finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs from the leadoff spot, also logging an outfield assist. Makaley Boswell continued her strong season with two doubles, a sacrifice fly and a walk to pair with two RBIs and a stolen base. Additionally, Mia Tidmore and Dailynn Motes recorded three-hit games.
Lovell stepped into the circle for her first career start and struck out one in a perfect first inning. The Trojans threatened with a double off the bat of Makaley Boswell in the first, but nothing came of it.
In the second, Lovell worked around an error, striking out two and getting a nice running grab from Kiley Huffman to escape the frame. Back-to-back singles from Tidmore and Motes got the Trojans offense churning in the second.
Kam Munson scored both the runners with a deep shot to left field, and Troy loaded the bases with two infield singles. After working deep into the count, Boswell drove one in with a sacrifice fly.
Two more strikeouts got Lovell out of a tough third inning featuring an error and a walk, bringing her total to five punchouts. She sat down a sixth batter via the strikeout in the fourth and spun another clean inning in the fifth.
Cunningham brought home a run for the third straight game in the fifth inning, rocketing a single back up the middle to score Boswell.
The Lions got on the board in the sixth via a solo home run off the bat of Briley Dover, forcing Lovell out of the game. Cunningham stepped into the circle for her first pitching appearance as a Trojan and surrendered one run to make it a 4-2 ballgame.
The Trojans got their insurance runs in the sixth, as Munson started the rally with a walk. Ricks scored two with a laser beam up the middle. With Ricks on second, Boswell annihilated her second double of the day into the gap to widen the lead to 7-2.
The Trojans added another run with a Huffman RBI double and finished off the win with a bases-loaded RBI single off the bat of Motes and a hit-by-pitch from Sophia Jenkins.
TROY 9, Chattanooga 10
Troy dropped its first game of the season in a back-and-forth 10-9 contest with Chattanooga. Home runs from Kalee Rochinski and Sophia Jenkins weren't enough as the Trojans brought the winning run to the plate in the seventh inning.
Rochinski tied her career high of three RBIs with a 2-for-3 game, also slapping an RBI double into the gap to pair with her two-run shot. Jenkins upped her team-best OPS to 2.556 with two hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
The Mocs put up three in the first inning after a few singles, a hit-by-pitch, a sacrifice fly and a two-RBI double. Although Kyye Ricks led off the inning with a single and Kiley Huffman drew a walk, the Trojans were unable to close the gap.
With a moonshot to centerfield, Rochinski made it a 3-2 ballgame. Freshman Presley Ivey took a nine-pitch walk to get on base before the blast. The Trojans manufactured another run off a hit-by-pitch, stolen base and infield single from Makaley Boswell to knot it up at 3-3.
Chattanooga took the lead back in the third with two runs off back-to-back infield singles, but the Trojans battled right back. Dailynn Motes led off the frame with a double and a stolen base, and Presley Ivey brought her home with a base knock to make it 5-4.
Savannah Money entered the game in relief of Mya Holt after the Mocs put runners on first and second to start the fourth inning. Chattanooga scored three runs to take an 8-4 lead before Emma Banks entered the game at pitcher and got out of the inning.
Chattanooga added another run in the fifth inning, but Rochinski got the Trojans the run back with a double to deep left center field, making it 9-5.
Jenkins destroyed an opposite-field, two-run home run to bring the Trojans closer in the bottom of the fifth. While the Mocs got another run in the top of the sixth, Cunningham wasted no time getting the run back. Huffman led off the inning with a double, and Cunningham scored her with a double of her own.
The Trojans couldn't get any more in the bottom of the sixth, and Esmee Ames went to the circle for the seventh after finishing out the sixth inning. Ames worked a clean seventh, striking out two.
Boswell made it a one-run game with a sacrifice fly as the tying run made it to third, but a groundout ended it.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"It was a decent day. Obviously there was a big win against UNA in the opener and we kind of fell in the nightcap. We just had a team meeting and we're disappointed, but the resiliency and the fight of this team, even to the very end was impressive. I pictured us winning there. We talked about meeting adversity in the fall and we met that adversity tonight. I'm not happy about the outcome but there are certainly some positives to take away."
