PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – Troy carded 17 birdies as a team and Jason Quinlan fired a career-best 69 to lead Troy in Monday's opening round of the Golfweek/AGT Intercollegiate on the True Blue Course at the Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort.
Quinlan, who is making his first start and just third appearance for the Trojans, was nearly perfect on the day carding four birdies and just one birdie en route to his 3-under. He birdied the second, seventh and eighth before the turn and went to 4-under with a birdie on No. 10. He was tied for the lead going into the final hole but recorded his only bogey of the day on 18.
Troy shot 1-under as a team, its 12th round under-par this year, and finds itself just two shots off the pace despite uncharacteristically poor rounds from the top of its lineup. The Trojans' 17 birdies were the second most in the field, while its 1-under team score on the par-4 holes led the tournament.
Jake Springer birdied No. 9 and No. 13 around a pair of bogeys to shoot even on the day and find himself in a tie for 19th place. Will McFadden and Nicklas Borrmann shot 1-over with five combined birdies to sit in a tie for 31st place, while Brantley Scott had a rocky day with a field-best six birdies, but a triple and double pushed his card to 2-over par, good for 49th place.
Teams will play 18 more holes Tuesday with Troy playing in the top pairing along with Valpo and Delaware beginning at 8:15 a.m. (CT) off the first tee.
