Men's Tennis Drops Heartbreaker at Louisiana

LAFAYETTE, La. – Troy and Louisiana battled for almost five hours Saturday morning into the afternoon before the Cajuns came away with a 4-3 victory in Sun Belt Conference action at the Cajun Tennis Courts.

Troy (13-4, 1-2 SBC) won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead but quickly found itself in a 3-1 hole after the Cajuns (9-6, 2-0) won on courts four, five and six in singles.

Carles Anton bounced back from a 6-1 loss in the opening set to win in a tiebreak in set two before a commanding 6-2 win in the third set to pull Troy within one, 3-2. Then, on the top court, freshman Mario Martinez Serrano showed the poise of a senior winning a three-set thriller to tie the match.

Martinez won the opening set, 6-4 before his opponent took set two, 6-3. The two battled back-and-forth in the third before Martinez won 7-5 in a tiebreak setting up the deciding match on court three.

Yeray Andres Pastor dropped the opening set 6-2 but rallied to win the second set by a 6-4 margin. He trailed 5-2 in the third but won three straight games to take a 6-5 lead before Alejo Ferrer Chueca forced a tiebreak, which he won 7-4 to clinch the match for Louisiana.

Jules Fabre and Noah Martens teamed up for a 6-3 win on court one in doubles after the Cajuns won on court two. Martinez and Vito Llinares clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court three.

Troy travels to rival South Alabama next Saturday in its lone match of the week.
