HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Troy shutout Southern Miss, 4-0, Wednesday afternoon in Sun Belt Conference action at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex; the match was a rescheduled contest from this past Sunday.
Teams played to clinch due to the mid-week matchup, with both teams set for more league matches this weekend. Troy (14-4, 2-2 SBC) took the doubles point and then won the first three singles matches to move back even in league play; the Trojans were up a set on the three courts that were unfinished.
In doubles, Carles Anton and Yeray Andres Pastor teamed up for a 6-2 win on court two, while Mario Martinez Serrano and Francisco Erramuspe won 6-4 on court three to lock up the doubles point for Troy for the third time in four league matches.
Martinez won his seventh straight match on court one with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 victory to push Troy in front 2-0; the Troy freshman is now 16-2 this spring, with 15 of his wins coming on the top court.
Noah Martens followed close behind, with a 6-3, 6-2 win on court five to snap a mini three-match skid and Vito Llinares clinched the victory for Troy with a 6-1, 6-3 victory on court six, pushing his overall record to 11-4 on the spring.
The win sets up a big matchup Saturday for the Trojans at rival South Alabama.
