ORLANDO, Fla. – Ten runs and eight hits in the first inning, coupled with a dominating pitching performance from Zach Fruit propelled Troy to a 12-3 win over UCF to even the series Saturday afternoon from John Euliano Park. The win ends Troy's three-game losing streak.
There was production up and down the Troy (12-3) lineup. Seven different Trojans had an RBI, with all nine starters reaching base. Caleb Bartolero led the way with three RBIs, while Kole Myers and Kyle Mock each had two.
Ben McCabe was all of the offense for UCF (10-4), as he hit two home runs in the game. First, a two-run shot getting the Knights on the board, then a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh.
The scoring was started three pitches in as Myers launched a lead-off home run for the third time this season. It was Myers's fourth home run of the year. The Trojans never looked back as two singles followed the home run, and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Shane Lewis, who recorded his 30th RBI of the season with a single.
The hit parade continued as Mock found a hole in the infield bringing in two more. The Trojans had six hits total in their game last night; six of the first seven batters for Troy had a hit in the first inning.
The Trojans scored their fifth run before recording the first out courtesy of a bases-loaded walk to Tremayne Cobb Jr. Myers saw his second RBI of the inning as he also walked with the bases loaded.
Ethan Kavanagh scored two runs in the ball game and had an RBI, having two plate appearances in the first, with an RBI bringing in the Trojans' seventh run and forcing UCF to bring in their third pitcher of the inning.
Caleb Bartolero greeted Nick Viera with a first-pitch double to left field that cleared the bases, stretching the lead to 10. It was the Trojans' first 10-run inning since March 9, 2022, against Jacksonville State.
Zach Fruit (2-0) had his best game in the Trojan uniform this season and earned his second win of the year. Fruit went five innings, giving up two runs on five hits and four walks, and struck out a season-high nine batters.
UCF starter Chase Centala (1-1) had a rough start as he wouldn't record an out as the Trojans knocked him for four runs on three hits and only 14 total pitches.
Viera was the third pitcher used in the first inning and came in and settled things down. Viera would finish going 5.2 innings, only allowing one hit and striking out six. Unfortunately for him, the Knight's offense gave him little help as they left 12 runners on base.
The Trojan bullpen followed Fruit's performance and kept the Knights' offense in check. Kristian Asbury and Brandon Schrepf each went two innings and struck out three, with only one run scoring between them.
The 11th and 12th Trojan runs came off the bat of freshman Brooks Bryan who came in as a pinch hitter earlier in the game. Bryan laced a single to left field scoring Sullivan and when the right fielder misplayed the ball Lewis was able to come in and cross home plate to put the game well out of reach.
Troy will look to win the series tomorrow, Sunday, March 12, at noon as the two teams wrap up the three-game set from Orlando.
