Β
TROY, Ala. βΒ Winners of nine straight, the Troy men's tennis team opens a five-match road swing Friday at East Tennessee State; first serve is set for 2 p.m. from the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex.
Β
Troy (9-1) has not lost since its opening match at Miami and is off to its best start since the spring of 2021 when the Trojans opened that season 16-1 with winning streaks of six and 10 matches to open the year.
Β
Freshman Mario Martinez Serrano is 17-4 to open his collegiate career, including a 9-1 mark during the spring, playing all but one of his matches on court one. He has won nine straight singles matches and is one of three Trojans riding a winning streak of three or more.
Β
Francisco Erramuspe has provided the Trojans solid depth at the back of the lineup, where he is 5-0 on court six and has won six straight matches overall. Vito Llinares is another strong anchor for head coach Rolando Vargas' squad, winning his last three matches and posting a 6-1 record this spring.
Β
Carles Anton joins Martinez as a strong 1-2 punch at the top of the lineup as the Trojans are a combined 16-2 between the pair on courts one and two, while Noah Martens is 3-1 in limited action this spring. Two other freshmen have rotated in and out of Vargas' lineup, with Jules Fabre and Yeray Andres Pastor both logging matches on the middle courts.
Β
Troy has won 75.5 percent of its singles matches this spring (40-13) and 66.7 percent of its doubles matches (18-9). Vargas has tinkered with his doubles lineups but has found recent success with Llinarnes and Martnes (4-0) plus Anton and Fabre (3-1).
Β
ETSU (0-8) has gotten off to a slow start against a tough schedule that featured five teams from the SEC and ACC in addition to South Alabama, Air Force and Abilene Christian.
