Trojans’ Perfect Start Comes to an End

TROY, Ala. – For the first time in the spring schedule, the Troy women's tennis team suffered a loss, 4-3, against in-state foe Jacksonville State, on Saturday afternoon at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.
The Trojans (3-1) find themselves down for the first time in 2023 and the first time at home after falling to the Gamecocks (6-1) for the first time in recorded history.
Troy started slow in doubles as Ella Tuomela / Anna Syrova made quick work of Maria Guirguis / Valeriia Avdeeva, 6-3. But, on court two, Kristina Kukaras / Hagar Amin had the roles reversed, dominating for the 6-3 victory.
Tied 1-1 in doubles, Andrea Widing / Olivia Elliott battled back-and-forth against Romane Mosse / Irene Artigas, forcing the tiebreaker with the score knotted up, 6-6. However, the tiebreaker was never in question as the pair of Trojans dominated it, 7-1 for the 7-6 set victory, 1-0.
Singles play saw JSU fire back at Troy with three straight points on courts one, four and three. First, Kristina Kukaras fell 6-4, 6-2 before Olivia Elliott dropped 6-1, 7-5. After Valeriia Avdeeva fell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, the Trojans were down 3-1.
Court five had Guirguis on top through the first set, winning 6-3. Then, facing match point, the Egypt native collapsed in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, to hand the win to the Gamecocks, 4-1.
Despite the match already being decided, court two saw Amin fight to remain the only Trojan undefeated in singles play. The sophomore battled in her first set, winning 7-5, before falling in the second 6-3. The extra set saw Amin take over, not allowing a single point to win, 10-0, and put Troy back on the board, 4-2.
Lastly, on court six, Franziska Ahrend won her second straight singles with a 6-4, 7-5 victory to finalize the score at 4-3.
