Troy Drops Shootout to Coastal Carolina

TROY, Ala. – Troy lost its second-straight Sun Belt home game for the first time in seven years after falling, 99-97, to Coastal Carolina Thursday night in Trojan Arena.
Coastal Carolina (12-14, 7-8 SBC) hit 16 3-pointers in the game, with Deaja Richardson connecting on 8-of-9 from beyond the arc after entering the game as just a 28 percent shooter from deep. The Chanticleers also took advantage of a frequent whistle hitting 27-of-36 free throws on 29 Troy fouls, nine more than its season average.
Nia Daniel tied the game for the Trojans (16-10, 11-4), hitting a pair of free throws with 1:27 to play, erasing a 5-point Coastal advantage in less than a minute. However, Coastal scored six of the game's final 10 points – all from the free throw line – to snap a seven-game losing streak to the Trojans.
Troy slipped into a three-way tie with James Madison and Old Dominion for first place in the Sun Belt standings with three games remaining; the Dukes and Monarchs meet on Saturday.
The game turned midway through the fourth quarter after Ja'Mia Hollings put the Trojans up 79-76 with 6:54 remaining. The Chants hit three 3-pointers in a span of 52 seconds to take an 85-79 lead.
Amber Leggett posted her third double-double of the season with 25 points and 14 rebounds, Daniel added 20 points, Hollings had 18 points and Jashanti Simmons finished with 13 points. Makayia Hallmon dropped in 11 points and dished out seven assists.
Richardson finished with a game-high 31 points, while Aja Blount scored 22 points, thanks to 10-of-10 from the free throw line, as she was the beneficiary of nine fouls called in her favor.
Troy wraps up its home schedule Saturday playing host to App State (9-17, 5-10) on Senior Day in Trojan Arena, tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
