Future Remains Bright
Troy enters off its third straight loss to start the 2023-24 season. However, the Trojans haven't gone without a fight after remaining tied with No. 15 Tennessee after the first 10 minutes of play, 21-21, and nearly outscoring them in the fourth last Sunday.
Nia Daniel led the charge for the Trojans with a 19-point performance that included four made 3-pointers. Tai'Sheka Porchia (18), Ja'Mia Hollings (16) and Shaulana Wagner (10) added to the fight by tallying 10-plus points. Porchia also led the team in rebounds with eight, while Sharonica Hartsfield swiped away a team-high three steals.
Despite the slow start, the Trojans remain firm in their identity of rebounding, tied as the 71st-ranked team in the NCAA in offensive rebounds at 14.3 and tied for 88th in total rebounds at 40.67. Compared to the other Sun Belt teams, Troy ranks in the top four in assist-to-turnover ratio (third – 0.93), free throw percentage (third. – 72.9), three-pointers per game (fourth – six) and turnovers per game (fourth – 15.3).
Bad News Bruins
The Bruins are fresh off playing in Las Vegas at the 2023 Ball Dawgs Classic. There, Belmont faced No. 4 Stanford and Northwestern, losing to the ranked opponent 74-55 before winning against the Wildcats 83-61.
Belmont dominated its game over Northwestern in nearly every statistical category, outrebounding the Wildcats 36-31, outshooting them on 53.6 percent from the field, 50 from deep and 86.7 from the charity stripe and outworking them in the paint with 32 points to their 22. Defensively, Belmont demonstrated why its perimeter defense is ranked 19th in the country, limiting Northwestern to 29.4 percent from deep.
After having five players reach double-figures in the win on Nov. 25, the Bruins have Tessa Miller (14.8), Jailyn Banks (14.3), Kendal Cheesman (12.3) and Tuti Jones (11.7) averaging double-digits. Cheesman also stands as the team's top rebounder with 7.8 per game. The Bruins primarily run through their starting five as they account for 88.7 percent of the team's points, 76.1 percent of rebounds and 85.1 percent of assists.
